Hi all,
when my computer started up today, I got a dialogue that popped up and soon as jaws came up. it said: notice, deadline approaching. jaws didn't read anything when i arrowed down, not even when I routed the jaws cursor. wwhat the heck is this deadline approaching? has it got something to dowith the stupid windows genuine advantage thing, and th efact that i didn't install it or any updates at all since it came out? seems like the first time i read about it when it came up in the system tray, it said you didn't have to install it, but you wouldn't be able to upgrade microsoft products. well thats fine w ith me, I have no desire to upgrade microsoft progrmas. Now this horrible notice about a deadline approaching. eeeks!

Hi,
Well, this may not even be a microsoft thing. But it may very well be a sort of spyware, as it happens sometimes. Also, have you not also installed any trial version of a programme of any kind? game or things like that?It is possible that sometimes the diog boxes aren't quite visible to jaws if all your programmes have not been loaded and this because video intercept is not quiet ready.

If your useing AVG virus software, then it is probably that. On Jan1 they will discontinue offering free software. every time your computer restarts that message will pop up. Just hitting enter on that should bring up the AVG homepage if your connected to the net.there's my two cents.

My guess is that it's some sort of balloon generated by a program on your computer. Very well could be the windows genuine advantage thing or, as others have suggested, an AVG warning. It could come from anywhere actually.

If nothing else, I would seek sighted assistance at this point.

About the windows genuine advantage. You really should install that, and install (most) of the updates that come out. Unless, of course, your version of windows is, er, less than legal. I'll admit that I fought it too for a while, but they are pretty serious about this thing. And, it is very important that you update with the latest security fixes. Other wise, your computer is vulnerable to all kinds of hacking. It's not your fault that ms can't get it right the first time, but, them's the facts of life. They didn't, and you are vulnerable.

If I can help you further with this, give me a pm and we'll see what can be done. If you can't get sighted assistance with the balloon, there may be ways we could explore it with jaws, but, that would be a trial and error thing.

Thanks.
Bob

I use avg so it is probably that. Thanks for the heads up about the virus software.

lol, updating your microsoft windows? Ok... let me make this clear....

1. Microsoft started doing the genuine verification toool (which is sometimes helpful; not!) anyone that could get the same tool on more than one computer is "entitled" to these updates.. and these little advertisements that are promising events... that unfortunately are usually "discontinued" or "not available until..." or "not available if you do or don't..." then not only you are no longer offered... but rather "forced" to do something in order to accomplish or get something else that is probably not worth your time.
2. It also depends what sites you visit... if you are into a lot of crack searches or pr0n.... there is a lot of probability that you are indeed being atacked; nevertheless, it is your OWN FAULT, not the creators of the site, because they know well enough that your desire is beyond supposed control... and that is a nice way to teach you if you don't know how to get things right.
3. Miscrosoft updates usually restrain you more. Take for instance the little system file... ctcip.sys. This file limits the number of connections your computer can make at the same time to 10. This is released so hackers wouldn't get into your system. While i prevents some kind of hacking from happening... what if, you are working on a word document... (not surfing the net, or anything, but still connected to the internet) the hacker go have 10 yummy entrances to your computer.... and the same would happen. So basically.... i never bother to install these, and i believe the programs are another way to fill up space in your computer... although they usually help. AVG has given me more than enough conflicts with this and that... and beware that the files are not inffected... geez, it is just like a nursing home! anyway... oh right! back to the main point. Just don't bother installing these updates... when i was without them, my computer ran so smoothly... I am not kidding--you turned it on and the desktop would be showing in 30 seconds... 1 gig of ram *reasonable. But now that I installed all the updates... my computer does nothing but freeze after the desktop comes up, so when i finally can do anything or see the desktop clearly it is over 5 minutes with the same gig of ram (totally irrational)... so explain then... "oh my god, I'm getting hacked!" well, either... turn of the internet or.... restore your system...? but don't expect software to do all the magic for you... nope.

Hello wonder woman,
If you are using AVG, I can guarantee you that the dialog box you saw was, in fact, from AVG. The same thing happened to me, and I had my boyfriend come read it to me. It was a message from AVG, saying that I would no longer be able to use the AVG, starting in Janyuary.

So, here is my question to everyone who is using AVG. What does this mean? Are they for sure taking away our antivirus program?

Post 12 by sparkie (the hilljack) on Saturday, 25-Nov-2006 20:08:27

No, this means that they are discontinuing the free 7.1 I too was confused about this message but as far as I know they are still going to be offering free software as when I updated to AVG free 7.5 the msg went away. By the way AVG 7.5 is accessible.

About that avg 7.5.

One time I was presented with a dialog that said "update to AVG7.5" and I didn't want to do it right then so I checked "remind me later". That was a couple of weeks ago and I haven't been reminded again. But I'm ready to update now.

I've tried the regular update, but that just updates my virus definitions, and doesn't say anything about 7.5.

Can anyone tell me how to get AVG7.5?

Thanks,
Bob

Thanks Troy, for clearing that up. However, I have the same question as Bob. Do we just go to Grisoft's web site, and download 7.5 from there?

Post 16 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Sunday, 26-Nov-2006 12:37:01

I saw a warning on the web site not to download the 7.5 from there but to do it in the AVG program itself. But, I can't find anywhere to update it in the program. Clicking on "update" simply updates the virus database etc.

Oh I see. Well then, I'm confused on what to do. lol

Post 18 by sparkie (the hilljack) on Sunday, 26-Nov-2006 20:00:01

I updated it from the website with no problems. Why you the updater doesn't work for updating the program itself have no clue but like I said I ended up going to the website myself.

Okay, I'll try that. I guess the worse that can happen is....

Well, I'll try it anyway, thanks Troy.

well for some reason, I haven't seen that message come up since that day. I went in th etech help room on vip, and one of th emoderators came in there, and when i explainded the problem to her, she said th enext time that dialogue box comes up, just use the verttttual window, or i think it's virtualize window, control insert w to put the message in the virtual buffer, then copy and paste it either in an email to myself, or word pad so jaws would read it. I fully intened to do just that, but that message hasn't popped up again. every once in a while i get a message from update manager telling me it needs to check for updates. that was sort of s ccarey, and i know i update avg every frieay, when it's scheduled to update. When i ran windows 95, I never installed any of the updates, because i've heard they can be buggy sometimes, and someone told me they just take a lot of space on your hard drive, but since going to xp, I did start installing th eupdates. I'm relieved grisoft will stil be offering a free version of avg. I was reallly upset to think they wouldn't be offering one anymore. I don't have any trial ware games on my computer. the only thing i have thats a trial version that i know of is microsoft office, but I don't have the product key to use it, and don't really have the need to, so I've never even used it once. I wonder if the games or one of th eupdates didn't do something though, not to a program, because the programs i do use work fine, but i decided to try and uninstall snapfish for your photos, and another photo program I cant think of the name of right now, but they weren't in add/remove. they're still under programs, but they aren't listed in add remove. The same sort of thing happened to me when i upgraded from windows 95 to 98. I found it had taken some programs out of the add/remove, such as comptons encyclopaedia, and jaws 3.0, so I couldn't remove them. As for louiano's claim that it's all your fault, what are we suppose to do? if we don't update, we may be hacked, if we do update, the update may make one of our other programs unusable. so, is it our fault if we do or don't?

Okay, I did it. Updated my AVG and ran a scan to see how accessible it was, and everything seems fine.

Unfortunately, I didn't write down the URL to pass it on here, but it's on the Grissoft site.

The dialog box is telling you to update to AVG7.5. Someone had to read the dialog box to me too. It wasn't accessible with jaws

well, it hasn't come again since that day, so what i think I'm going to do is just wait till I get another warning or notice, then try to update from the program itself instead of downloading it from the site. Thanks all for your responses.

The warning will direct you to the grisoft site. Save yourself time and go to the website and download 7.5 the more you wait the more you put your computer at risk. Just as advise. Star
